for all I hear are echoes, repeat inside my mind

[In peace, may you leave the shore. In love, may you find the next. Safe passage on your travels until our final journey on the ground... May we meet again.

Lief thinks of Raven. Perhaps selfishly, when there were others who died, but—he thinks of one of his closest friends here (even if, indirectly, she'd caused much of his misery), and briefly, anger sparks before he quells it. There's little point to it.

Besides, above all, he's tired of it, all the death and suffering. He has been for years. The idea of revenge stopped seeming sweet a long, long time ago. In its place is nothing but a desire for peace.

(And he knows that, if he were in Akira's place, he might not have done any differently.)

He doesn't really know what he wants to say, and yet, he goes out to seek Akira nevertheless.]

[... With any luck, this game will be over soon—but there's no joy to be had. Lief didn't expect to walk away from this trial feeling triumphant to begin with, but perhaps this is worse than he had thought it would be.

Just... let this end, already.

Lief's wandering aimlessly around the island, not quite ready to face people yet. Lief's generally an extrovert, but that trial exhausted him of all will to deal with others right now—give or take a few.

It's as he's walking around that he sees Magilou.]

...

[Honestly, since Magilou is off drying herself and thus Lief has yet to get his cloak back (not that he's in any hurry, really), he's pretty damn cold, but.

Well, he almost doesn't feel it right now.

He knew Fie was likely going to die; she had to. They had both known it, when he'd held her and told her he didn't hate her, even now. Still, he didn't want to be the one to find her body, or to have to drag it as if it meant nothing because—

... Because though he knew his promise to Yona was a pathetic one—one he didn't have the power to keep—he was starting to hope, this week, that perhaps he could.

So, anyway. He's freezing and, fingers digging into the trunk, he's just going to bang his forehead against the nearest tree, once but hard.]

[...

The grief has dulled to an empty edge, his mind shutting down, as it tends to do, so that he can focus. Perhaps not to the extreme it would if he were facing danger, but... well, he can put aside his feelings for now. There's someone he's worried about, as much as he knows she won't appreciate it, most likely.

With that in mind, his expression grim, he sets out to find Vriska.]

[Sometimes, he wonders if Prussia would've done better with a different partner. Someone smarter or braver, perhaps. Not someone like him, who can only get things half-done and be told, at this point, that there's nothing left for him to do. Regardless of wondering, though, they're stuck with what they have. He can only hope he was even a bit worthy.

In any case, he'll be waiting at their hut for her, his expression tired but focused.]

[He did say that he would share his information with Hiro—and this is something that everyone deserves to know. Once Lief finds him, he'll start off with:]

I would like to talk about the letters from the dead.

[... Most likely, things will come to an end soon. Lief wishes he could feel relieved, but all that he can muster is an aching tiredness and sense of grief. But... it doesn't matter right now. He was told to share what he learned, and though he knows it's not his right to tell others everything, there are at least a few things they should know.

And so, bracing himself for the cold, he goes to find Yona.]

[Knock, knock, Fie. Guess who's out in the cold for you?]

Fie? It is me, Lief.

[The snow and wind are definitely picking up now, and yet, shivering underneath his cloak, Lief sets out to find one more person.

He's tired, and knowing that Jacopo and the others believe in him makes him that much more terrified of failure—while another part of him wonders, would it really matter? He's not the center of this story, after all. His existence in this "game" is expendable.

... Bellamy's isn't. Though he may not have a role, he's the tie that binds so many of them together.

As soon as Lief finds him—alone—he says, quietly,]

Are we dreaming?
